Elements and Principles

Elements and Principles of Design Exercises (2 weeks)
Each assignment is worth 10 marks.
Carry out the following exercises in any order. Finish 2-3 exercises per day. 8”x8” 300dpi
If you are unfamiliar with the elements and principles, look up definitions on the internet prior to proceeding.
1.Line – use lines to convey the following: speed, frustration, calm, depth,
2.Shape – use 3 shapes (no more) to create a self portrait
3.Colour – use colour to create the following moods: happiness, depression, anger, lust. Create colour swatches that could be classified as: analogous, monotone, split complimentary. Label each.
4.Space – Arrange collage elements on a page to emphasise absent space.
5.Texture – create, photograph, illustrate, or collage 5 textures: smooth, rough, hairy, gravelly, wet.
6.Shade – Integrate 12 different shades of grey into a composition.
7.Volume – using your name as the basis, create either implied or actual volume.

8.Rhythm – Create a graphic representation of a song using only basic geometric shapes.
9.Pattern – create a repeated pattern that is arranged symmetrically, radially, or dynamically
10.Emphasis – arrange 4-5 objects on a page to emphasise one particular object.
11.Contrast – create two versions of an object: one that is camouflaged into it's surrounding, and one that jumps out
12.Balance – create a sense of balance using two differently sized objects
13.Movement – lead the viewer's eye in a zigzag pattern across the composition
